Toning with Transtint and Shellac

The door I sanded had a scratch and I tried sanding it to smooth it out thinking that I would be able to touch it up by hand using the transtint mixed with shellac and alcohol. Can I? or do I have to…

Water based topcoats, if necessary, in hot or dry climates can be thinned 10%-20% with water to extend the open time. Other that, I would shoot from the can. I have sprayed General Finishes High Performance, which has good body (has higher solids...…

I wouldn't thin unless you need to. Throw some in the gun, spray a sample and let it dry. Most times I don't feel the need to thin the water based stuff very much (at least the brands I work with). If you do need to thin, don't add too much. Maybe 1…

Try it, if it all goes south. Guess the good news is, you could start over and make a new plywood door? -Ace-

Ray get a scrap, recreate your finish. Make several sand through’s. Practice repairing. Are you using a compress air spray gun? If so turn the air up some, you want to atomize (fine droplets) of the shellac and Transtint. Turn your fan down to a sma…

I have finally finished toning. I did make a mistake I might need some help with. I sanded down a corner of a door a bit much and it lightended that area up. Can I just use a foam brush and apply a mixture of Shelac, Alcohol and Transtint to touch i…

Never used it but hear it does fine. Water based topcoats are best applied by spray, but you don't have to. It will look awful at first then it flows out nicely. Probably 3 coats will do you good. If you spray, practice on scrap and get a feel for i…

I will sand it with 320 and put my finish coat (thinking of using Polyclearic). Would this work OK? Thanks for comments Ace.
