flattening the sole of a plane

For a cheap Footprint, I went to Home Depot and got a granite floor tile, a can of WD40, sheets of 400 and 2000 wet/dry (black) sandpaper, and a spray can of 3M light adhesive. In retrospect, I shoul…

a new cicular saw?

IMHO, there is nothing better or safer than the obscenely priced Festool TS-55/Rail system for breaking down sheet goods. Yes, very expensive. But if you add to the $200 for a good worm drive, say an…

1/2 or 3/4 playwood? what to use

You should have no problem using 1/2 inch - plus it will be lighter and easier to work with. About the only thing you might watch out for is sag on long unsupported shelves. Just stiffen with a 3/4…

Thoughts on Grizzly

Our 55+ community woodshop here in Zellwood FL is almost entirely Grizzly - cabinet saw, bandsaw, various belt and spindle sanders, a 22" (I think) drum sander, Grizzly lathe, 15" planer, 6" jointer,…

Hi Dyami, The 3365 - at least on the woods I have used so far (a test board of 11" pine, maple cutting board, and a cherry table top) - at 1/128 - doesn't spew dust - just small shavings that go right to the floor (I don't have either the bag or va…

Chris, Glad to hear it's going well. I picked up the Bosch 1594K used at the yard sale area of the Long Island Woodworker's Show a few weeks ago. I hope to have it hooked up to my new vacuum hose boom and try it out soon. I'm hoping it works out bet…

Hi Dyami/Everyone, I've now been using the 3365 Bosch for a week or so now. At $99 in Home Depot - I'm thinking its a worthwhile buy. Mine was Swiss-made, and seemed to work perfectly right out of the box. The single 'woodrazor' carbide 2-edged bla…

After reading a somewhat favorable FWW review of the Baily-type Footprint 4B (FWW May-June 2005) that was supposedly (perhaps at that time) "made in Sheffield England" - I decided to buy mail order the 4B Smoother and 220H Block Plane. Don't! They…

Chris, I'm glad I could help. Let me know how you make out. I'm considering flattening my bench top this way, and I'd love to know if it works. Thanks, Dyami

Thank Dynami, Found one that's 'on target'. Attached as PDF in case anyone else is interested. If anyone else has other references, let us know? Thanks! Chris

Chris, I know there's a Fine Woodworking article on how to flatten a big table top with a power planer and a sander. Try searching around on their site for it.

Anyone have video or article references on using a power hand-planer (like the Bosch 3355) to finish-smooth a cherry table top too wide for a 15" planer? I'm looking to plane it so I can finish it directly - without any sanding whatsoever. Any and…

The Steel City site says the 4020's inserts are HSS - apparently not carbide. Any comments on this? Can carbide inserts be substituted? Looks similar to the Ridgid? Not necessarily bad..

I'm with Craig. Do you do a really lot of up to 12" crosscutting? If not, why not look at the TS-55 and MFT? I've an inexpensive Ryobi 10" and was looking to replace it with the Bosch 4410 to get greater width capacity. Instead, after really enjoyi…

Are the bar clamps used just as a vise? Or are they there and torqued tight all the time to stiffen up the entire 'bench'?

You mentioned 'mostly small items'.. Don't know how small - but small parts are a lot safer done with a Bandsaw - and you can get a decent one for $400. Maybe then get a table saw when you need it for furniture?
