I ask myself this question every time I get a splinter.

Because my wife doesn't. No, it allows me to star with something pretty simple and find something pretty nice. Art for those of us that can't draw.

The reason why I WILL be woodworking is the ability to clean out all the outside noise and just focus on you and making this piece(s) of wood take form and be something beautiful that I can share. A way to self express. Its one of the few activities that the process is just as if not more enjoyable then the end results. Plus what person doesn't like to collect toy....err...tools:-)

I keep thinking, maybe one of these days I'll stop buying tools and start doing some woodworking ;) Seriously, though, the total concentration and blocking of the outside noise that Jason mentioned are my reasons. Completely focused on something that isn't a computer screen, and the output is beautiful to boot. Can't beat it!

Just bought my first lathe last weekend, and from what I hear that's an activity that is the pinnacle of concentration. One guy described turning as the woodworking equivalent of playing an instrument. Unfortunately, I have to wait for an extra drive belt to arrive. But i can't wait!

I would agree with the instrument comment. I don't turn all that much, but when I do, its an awesome experience. Watching the tool peel away ribbons of wood almost puts you in a trance. Not necessary a dazed and confused sort of trance, but a trance of concentration. Its a lot of fun.

Not that I have actually done much woodworking, per se, but it gives me time to myself to hopefully make something useful. I have plans to make a potato bin and a new dresser for my daughter, but finding the money, the time, and the get-up-and-go to get it done is very elusive.

I hope to get my garage organized so I can accomplish stuff without feeling all discombobulated, and then perhaps I can make some real progress.

So far I have made a coat rack for the front door and it only took me two years to finally finish:-D

Got into turning recently and know that feeling. I use woodworking as a creative outlet. Due to health reasons I don't get nearly as much time as I'd like to get some of my ideas outside my brain ;)

Well this is a deep question. I do therefore I am. HUH... No I found you can't golf, fish or play online poker enough to fill all the time I have on my hands. So woodworking seemed the right outlet to round out my day. I don't get into the shop as much as I would like because other hobbies and life keeps getting in my way. That and I cannot finish anything I start.

It soothes me.

Because I want to be good with my hands again, and woodworking is utilitarian as well as aesthetic.

Because I'm a workaholic who can't work, and tinkering in my shop gives me focus and purpose. That plus it allows me to feed my tool fetish.

I am not at all a person with complex attachments. Wood is simply good. wood is always good. I can sit out in my shop and all the stress in the world just melts away.

I started because of restoring an old house. I realized it was fun and began doing more projects.
