Wood Whisperer Community

Well I'm still putting my garage shop together.
I want to start a project. I'd consider myself only slightly more than a beginner being that I work with most of these tools in a non-woodworking fashion.
So I want a good beginner project.

As far as the wood shop tools this is what I've got to work with.
Right now I have a table saw, compound miter saw, router, hand plane, hand sanders and a drill press & a handful of clamps.

My goal is a cabinet project but I need a few smaller projects before I tackle the big one.

Any good ideas. I was considering a night stand but any other ideas would be fun.
This will also help me (I think) see what other tools I need.

I know about $$ being an issue... Which is why the router plate isn't in my possession yet...

FWIW, My BT3100 had the BT3Kit accessory kit with it, which included router mount for the accessory table, throat plates, and a pretty pitiful fence. I modified the snot out of the fence. Unlike some other BT3K owners I actually like the fence brackets... But plan on a better fence face again in the future. This one is v2.0, and v3.0 is on the drawing board...

If your rip fence has T Track in top, setting up L brackets to support the fence faces is simple...

As you can see I got REAL paranoid about fence durability, and made an overly thick lamination of 2 layers 3/4" MDF and 1/8" hardboard. Tough as a tank, just about as heavy too. I do not like the split fence faces, which is what I am fixing with the next version...

Version 1.0 was too short to make the feather boards of any use, and was honestly, scrap that was headed to the garbage can anyway...

My suggestion for anyone wanting to do this, do NOT split the fence halves the way I did. It was STUPID! I still want movable faces, but plan on bridging the next face ala Norm Abram's design. Just need to figure out something I can adjust from the face instead of the rear.

I had a direct drive, 2.5 horse power 10" saw with the extensions, a real contractor type deal with a ruff table and a really cheap fence.

Now I have a newer old craftsman, 3 horse belt driver 10" with a cast iron top and a xr2412 fence. .
Your first saw sounds like it was either a benchtop saw, or a jobsite saw. The saw you have now is considered to be a Contractor's saw. I know it's hard for some people to know the difference, especially if your a newbie with all of todays choices. Alot of people also mistake a Hybrid saw for a Cabinet saw. And then alot of the Hybrids aren't built the same, so people need to do some added homework before purchaseing one of those.

I am under no illusion, my new saw is far from a cabinet saw but it's 1000 times better then the bench deal I had. The smooth cast iron top an the fence are huge improvements.

the fence system has t channel so I can build feather boards and other accessories
