Q- What are the forum rules?
This is a place for woodworking discussion. So anything related to woodworking is fair game. Anything NOT related to woodworking goes in the Off-Topic section. And there are only two site-wide taboo subjects: politics and religion.
Q- How do I change my Privacy and Email notification settings?
A - Check out this how-to:
Privacy & Email Settings
Q- How do I find new forum posts?
A- The new content is always displayed right on the front page. We also display the latest photo and video entries. You can also click the Forum tab at the top, which will show you all the different forum "rooms". Above the rooms on the right side is a drop-down box labeled
View. Use this to change the view to
Discussions, and you'll have a nice list of all the latest discussions with the most recent first.
Q - How do I change my Avatar?
A- To change your avatar just click on the
My Page tab above and then click on
Settings at the top right. It will the first thing you see on the page and you can browse and add any image (preferably one of your mug). Also, while you are there, notice the menu items on the left of the page such as
Privacy and
Email? Its important that you inspect these settings so that you get the most out of your experience with the community.
Q- Where should I put a how-to or a tutorial?
A- If you have a great idea for a how to/tutorial try creating it as a
blog post. Your blog post can still receive comment, only you now have the option of moderating them. Writing it in your blog area also allows you to create multi-part posts and keep them together for consistency.
Q- How do I post pictures?
A- Check out this
Photo Posting Tutorial!
Q- What's the difference between the forum, a blog, and a group?
A- Post to a Blog if you have a subject you will write about regularly. Think of these as regular columns.
Todd Clippinger, for example, is blogging regularly about his shop organization experience. Although discussions may ensue, the blog is more of a place for a presentation, followed by comments and questions.
Post to the Forum if you have a question about a single topic and you want the everyone's opinion. For example,
Tim wants to know how to dry lumber properly. Forum postings can be about anything but should be pretty much stand-alone postings.
Post to a specific Group if you want to contribute to a discussion or ask questions about that specific topic. We have topic-based groups as well as regional groups.
Q- What RSS feeds are available on this site?
A- There are actually a LOT of feeds on this site. Aside from the main ones (which I'll get to in a second), there are feeds for specific conversations and blogs. So if there is one particular person you want to follow or a comment thread you want to follow, you can do that. Basically just look for the little gray RSS logo. In fact, there is one on the bottom left of this page. You could potentially use that to follow all the replies to this thread.
Now the main site feeds, which will probably be the most useful to you are as follows:
The Latest Forum Posts:
http://community.thewoodwhisperer.com/forum/topic/list?feed=yes&...
This feed shows each new thread that is posted. It will not be updated if someone leaves a comment on a thread. It only updates when a new thread is posted.
Latest Forum Activity:
http://community.thewoodwhisperer.com/forum/topic/list?feed=yes&...
This feed contains all activity in the forum, including replies to old posts.
The Latest Blog Posts:
http://community.thewoodwhisperer.com/profiles/blog/feed?xn_auth=no
This feed includes all new blog posts by the folks who are creating blog posts.
The Lastest Site Activity:
http://community.thewoodwhisperer.com/activity/log/list?fmt=rss
This is the "catch-all" feed. It essentially mimics the Latest Activity block in the left column of the Community Home Page. If you don't want to miss anything, this is what you should subscribe to.
Q- Can I cross-post content from my personal blog?A-Those
of you who have your own websites and blogs, will no doubt be tempted
to post some of your content here as well. I am perfectly fine with
that. But there are a few conditions.
1 - No Cross-Posts in the Forum section. Instead, use the Blog
feature.
2 - Post the full article. Posting a partial article or just a link is a
good way to get people annoyed with you.
3 - No sales pitches (keep affiliate links to a minimum please).
4 - You must come back and answer any questions you might receive on your post.
